Frequently Asked Questions
What if I change my mind after initially contacting an organization
about donating my car?
That isn't a problem and does happen. You can either call the organization
and tell them you had a change of heart or wait till they call you back
to confirm your information and tell them your decision.
Will
my car actually be useful for a charity?
Most car donations are greatly needed and appreciated by organizations.
They help seniors get to and from medical appointments, they provide transportation
for terminally ill children on day trips, and they give underprivileged
families a means to get around. It is best to contact the charity to verify.
How does the IRS determine the fair market value of my car?
The IRS will allow you to assess the value of your own vehicle when making
car donations. A good place to check the value of your car is the Kelley
Blue Book website at www.kbb.com , which is recognized as very reliable.
Another site is www.nada.com.
What does the owner need to bring when car donations are made?
Generally all that is required is the proof of ownership (the title),
personal identification, and, of course, the keys!
What if I don't have the title of car?
You should mention it to the charity when you contact them and some form
of arrangement will be made.
How long does it take for the charity to come get the car?
Depending on your location, the car will usually be towed within 5 business
days.
I have a car in the garage that hasn't run for the last few years.
Can I still give it as a donation?
Most charities will take in non-running cars as a donation so long as
the cost of repairs isn't excessive. If so, it will end up costing the
charity money instead of receiving money.
Do charities take all types of vehicles?
Most charities will accept vehicles other than cars such as trucks, vans,
RVs, motorcycles, boats, and even planes. It all depends on the charity
of your choice.
